Wiveliscombe's veterans' team returned to familiar ground at Minehead Tennis Club on Wednesday, May 4, but with the unfamiliar challenge of new Astroturf surfaces.
The result was some fine doubles tennis as Mary Hughes, Helena Trump, and Jeremies Birchall & Toye learned to deal with low shots skidding away on the softer surface. The Minehead squad of Maggie Rutty, Carole Webster, Dennis Hill and Alan Harding emerged as winners, by two-and-and-half matches to one-and-a-half.
The Astroturf is said to be easier on the legs, particularly for more seasoned players. Yet older heads are sometimes wiser, with the secret of the vets matches being the food, and for some, a little lunchtime tipple.
