Chris Mears wins ninth club singles title

Chris Mears won the Charnwood Tennis Club men's club singles title for the ninth time with a straight sets victory in the final on Sunday 1 September.

In a repeat of last year's final, top seed Mears took on second seed Ashton Zaranyika, both having progressed to the final without dropping a set in the previous rounds.

While Zaranyika took an early break to go 3-1 up in the opening set, Mears recovered quickly before pulling clear for a 6-3, 6-0 win.

While both men returned to action for the doubles' competition later in the day, it was Zaranyika who clinched the men's doubles title, pairing up with Neil Ruikar.

Zaranyika - who also won the doubles crown last year with Jack Phillips - and Ruikar defeated Dave Foster and Nick Goold 8-6 in the final.

The women's doubles event also took place, with club captain Holly Cheeseman and Bea Cooper emerging on top.

Cheeseman and Cooper narrowly defeated Elfreda Hedger and Emily Rodbourne in the final, taking an 8-6 win.

Men's singles plate champion Kevin Leck

The fourth club title of the day went to Kevin Leck, who won the men's singles' plate title.

Having narrowly defeated last year's plate winner James Carter in the semi-finals, Leck came through a tight match with Jack Hallam in the final before ultimately prevailing 7-5, 6-3.
