Charnwood Men’s First Team brought the curtain down on their Leicestershire County Winter League campaign with a 4-4 draw at Enderby in a fixture postponed from November.
After three wins and three defeats from their first six matches, Charnwood needed at least two sets from their final match to guarantee survival in the First Division for next season.
The Charnwood first pair of captain Chris Cottrell and Jamie Potts immediately secured both required sets in their opening rubber, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Enderby second pair Max Thorpe and Matt Stevenson.
The away team’s second pair, Jack Phillips and Dan Smith, also took a set in their opening match against Eliot Morris and Alex Carpenter, leaving Charnwood 3-1 ahead.
While Phillips and Smith lost in straight sets to Thorpe and Stevenson, Cottrell and Potts bounced back from losing the first set 2-6 against Morris and Carpenter to level the contest with a 6-3 win in the second set, and ensure the match finished tied overall.
The result left the First Team fifth in the eight-team league, and brought a successful Winter League season to a close, with the Second and Third Teams promoted from Division 3.
Women's Team Results
It was a similar story in the women's league, as Charnwood's First Team finished fifth in the Premier Division.
The quartet of Holly Cheeseman, Emily Rodbourne, Bea Cooper and Hannah Kendrick-Holmes hosted Ashby Castle in their final match of the season.
Charnwood's first pair Cheeseman and Rodbourne comfortably saw off Ashby's second pair 6-3, 6-1, but narrowly lost out against their first pair, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Kathryn Cook and Isabella Cockrell.
Despite four competitive sets, Cooper and Kendrick-Holmes lost both matches in straight sets, as Ashby claimed a 6-2 overall win.
The women's Second Team narrowly missed out on joining the First Team in the top flight, finishing fourth overall in Division 1A after a 4-4 draw in their final match against Rothley Ivanhoe.
