The women's doubles pitted Hannah Holmes and Lucy Matthews against Kim Stratford and Danielle Wells. Holmes and Matthews battled well, and the contest was close all the way through, but in the end a few good forehands from Stratford made the difference, helping Melton to a narrow 7-5 win.
In the men's doubles, Chris Cottrell and Kevin Leck took on Jake Beagle and former county player Ryan Parmar. A slow start from the Melton pair helped Cottrell and Leck to forge 5-1 ahead in the early stages. Parmar then began to find his range, and Cottrell soon found himself serving at 5-4. He nonetheless managed to hold on to this game with some characteristically aggressive groundstrokes, saving a couple of break points in the process. This proved to be decisive, and the Charnwood pair eased their way to an 8-4 victory.
In the clash of the top mixed pairs, Cottrell and Holmes took on Parmar and Wells. This was probably the highest quality match of the night, featuring some outstanding rallies. Cottrell and Holmes took an early lead, but were pegged back by the Melton pair, who gradually edged ahead to earn an 8-4 win, although the scoreline does not fully reflect the closeness of the contest.
In the second mixed match, Leck and Matthews faced Beagle and Stratford. The Charnwood pair also took an early lead here, but the middle phase of the match went against them, with Beagle striking some fine returns and Stratford hitting some excellent angled forehands. With time running out, the Charnwood pair found themselves 7-4 down, but a quick service hold meant they still had a chance of a draw if they could break Beagle's serve and take an early lead in the next game (the final game being awarded to the team which leads it when the match time elapses). Despite holding four break points, Leck and Matthews were probably guilty of over-pressing, and ultimately time ran out with Melton ahead in the game, so the final score was 8-5.
Overall, the match was therefore a 3-1 win for the champions, but Charnwood A had certainly pushed them all the way. Captain Kevin Leck observed that this had been a really competitive match, and the Charnwood team should be proud of their performance.
Meanwhile, Charnwood B played Ashby Castle A and despite playing some splendid tennis were defeated by four sets to love.
Charnwood C were also in action, this time against Sutton Bonnington B team, Charnwood were competitive in all matches but were defeated by three sets to one, their consolation victory in the women's doubles.
