Charnwood land third victory in Leicestershire Indoor League

Charnwood Tennis Club's first team continued their pursuit of runaway leaders Leicester Forest East in Division 1 of the Leicestershire Indoor Winter League at Loughborough University on Sunday 16th February.

The format features four doubles matches, each lasting 40 minutes, starting off with same-sex pairs, before two mixed doubles contests.

The Charnwood quartet of Caroline King, Caroline Wilkinson, Chris Cottrell and Neil Ruikar beat bottom side Syston Northfields 6-2.

Playing his first match of the season, Ruikar looked right at home on the fast University courts as he and Cottrell held off Syston’s men 7-5 to claim two points in the opening rubber.

The two Carolines also took their opening match by 7-6 to give Charnwood a 4-0 lead in the tie.

Cottrell and King continued their perfect record as a pair this season with a 6-4 victory, while Ruikar and Wilkinson narrowly lost out 6-5 in their mixed match, running out of time after recovering from an early 6-2 deficit.

The result ensured Charnwood's third win in four matches, with defeat to unbeaten Leicester Forest East the only blot on their copybook.

Charnwood Tennis club’s second team were also in action in Division One but lost a tight match to Market Bosworth, to leave them fifth in the seven-team Division.

Despite some quality tennis throughout, the quartet of Issy Agar, Justine Albert, Jamie Potts and Nick Barham lost out 7-1 to their strong opponents.
