Unders v Overs Competition

In the annual under versus over 50s tournament at Cheddar Tennis Club, the over-50s won convincingly to halt a run of defeats by their younger opponents stretching back to 2012.

The event was first held in 1957 in memory of Gordon Hill, who had been a talented young member, but sadly died in Burma in 1943 as a prisoner of war.

Traditionally held at the start of the season, this year’s tournament was delayed until after Wimbledon, which meant that the players were able to enjoy a cream tea with locally-grown strawberries after their exertions.

There is plenty of activity at the club throughout the summer holidays with head coach Stephen Pearce running tennis camps from Monday to Thursday three weeks running, from August 1-18, 10am-12.30pm for five to 10-year-olds and 1-4pm for 11 to 16-year-olds.

These include basic skills, fun games and matches. Players can enrol for as many sessions as they wish, with non-members as well as members most welcome.
