National League Update

The second team have been competing at a high level in Leicestershire County Division 1, despite suffering some ill-timed injuries during the season. This meant that whatever they did in this match could not save them from relegation. Nonetheless, Charnwood were determined to finish the season on a high.

The Charnwood team consisted of Ciaran Bibby, Ashraf el Menshawy, Kevin Leck, and Chris Cottrell, and the match started with each playing singles against their opposite number.

Bibby was dominant from the outset against the wholehearted Mark Maher, who lacks power in his shots but will run all day. Bibby never let him get into the match, winning 6-0, 6-1.

El Menshawy faced teenager Mytchel Briars in a battle of the big hitters. El Menshawy had too much knowhow for the Syston youngster, closing the match out 6-2, 6-2.

Leck faced the strongest of the Syston players, 22-year old Ukrainian Nikita Khoroshavin. There were many long games and several breaks of serve, but in the end, Leck's lack of a big serve made it difficult for him to close out crucial games against an aggressive opponent 36 years his junior. The final score was 6-3, 6-2 to Khoroshavin, in a match that took around 90 minutes.

Finally, Cottrell faced 15-year old Calum Stuart, with the Syston youngster battling well to take the first set to a tie-break. When Cottrell won this, however, Stuart seemed to lose heart a little, and the eventual result was 7-6, 6-0 to Charnwood.

Next it was time for the doubles. Leck and Bibby took on Maher and Stuart. The Charnwood pair were in control from the beginning, although the Syston partnership battled hard. The outcome was a 6-3, 6-3 win for Leck and Bibby.

El Menshawy and Cottrell faced Briars and Khoroshavin in what turned out to be the match of the day, featuring some spectacular rallies. Despite becoming quite fatigued in the heat, el Menshawy and Cottrell managed to close the match out 7-5, 6-3, clinching a 5-1 win for Charnwood overall.

Captain Kevin Leck commented 'we fought really hard in uncomfortably warm conditions - it was just a pity that luck had not been on our side earlier in the season. Nonetheless, hopefully we will be able to bounce back next season.'
