Division One League Winners 2023

Lorton Men 1st team encountered stiff opposition from a strong Lorton Men 2nd team last night in the last match of the season.  Lorton 1st finally emerged with a 6-2 win which brought them level with Seascale 1st on points at the top of the table.  When the dust had settled, Lorton 1st had their nose in front as they had won more sets overall than Seascale, and - crucially this season,   Lorton lead 11 sets to 5 in matches against Seascale.  This sees Lorton 1st as the Division one league champions.  Lorton 2nd finished in 4th place.

Lorton Ladies 1st had an even more dramatic end of season; at first glance appearing to have won the Ladies Division one title, a fact that was even reported in the Keswick Reminder!   Lorton 1st and Keswick had finished the league level on points, with Lorton appearing to win by just 1 set.  Careful scrutiny of the league rules by the Lorton Captain, however, spotted a recent amendment that changed everything.  The new rule stated that in the event of a points tie, then the league winner would be decided on the difference in sets in the matches played between those two teams - and in this case Keswick Ladies had beaten Lorton by 10 sets to 6.  Lorton have contacted Keswick to congratulate them on retaining the title.  Lorton Ladies 2nd team finished in 3rd place.
