125th Summer County Cup recap

On one of the hottest County Cup weeks for a while, the Somerset teams hit the grass courts at Ilkley and West Worthing, aiming for promotion!

Led by team Captains, Dan Manlow and Zoe Leach, the players were armed with suncream, gallons of water and plenty of support.

Both teams had some fantastic battles, and struggles, on the grass, but totally enjoyed competing and respresenting Somerset.

From Day 1, the teams aka The Cidermen and Ciderwomen, had some fantastic support from their fellow team mates and across social media.

Ladies Team Results:

The ladies got off to a fierce start and blasted through their first 3 opponents with relavtive ease. The day 3 win vs the inform Cambridgeshire sparked the excitement for promotion with two more matches to play.

Going into day 4, the ciderwomen knew that a win would guarantee them promotion, and that's exactly what they did and edigted past hosts Sussex 5-4!

With promotion already secured, the team were able to relax and took a 6-0 win over Beds in the final match.

Men's Team Results:

  • 3-6 loss vs Norfolk
  • 4-5 loss vs Lincolnshire
  • 2-7 loss vs Derbyshire
  • 2-7 loss vs Northamptonshire
  • 5-4 win vs Nottinghamshire

A tough start for the Cidermen who narrowly lost their first two encounters.

Three tie break losses vs Norfolk and  4 vs Lincs proved hard to take for the team and the results could have been so different. A positive from the tie vs Lincs saw the class from Felton & Manlow who bagged 3 from 3 to lead the charge.

Two 2-7 defeats followed, and with the team now plagued with injury, their time in Group 3 was cut short and relegation bound.

Not wanting to go out with 5 straight losses, the cidermen picked up the pace and defeated bottom place Notts 5-4 to finish in 5th place.
