Once again MPLTC overcame the rain gods for its May weekend LTA tournament. Instead of the forecast washout, it was a near dry weekend with shimmering tennis and plenty of Magdalen success.
The men’s draw saw no less than five MPLTC men reaching the quarter finals. Sam Thompson (not one of the two)seeded 10, fought his way to the semis but, in the end, the final was between seeds one and two. And it was the latter, MPLTC’s own Reuben Shahidullah, who took the title with a powerful all-round display including a barrage of blistering backhand winners.
The ladies’ event was strong with this year with some of MPLTC’s top women entering. There were some great quality matches with Elinor’s 11-9 third set tie break against Ellie a highlight. In the final, Lydia took on first seeded Jizel Fernandes who was ranked in the top 1000 last year. Her results suggested an easy triumph but the match was engrossing and hard fought and lasted as long as the men’s final before Jizel triumphed.
The ever popular over 45's men’s singles event had a full quality draw and it was new (ish) member Charlie Thomas who took the title nimbly disposing of multiple champion Cyr in the semis. The over 55's was again won by Sylvain Botbol.
The men’s doubles was smaller this year but there were still some great matches. In the end Reuben made it a double triumph alongside Dan Moloney in an emphatic final win.
The one day mixed event was again popular with strong pairs and high quality games. There was an all Magdalen final with Maeve and Ryan edging ahead of Emely and Jordan. Alongside the coveted tin of balls, the winners got a bottle of Moet kindly donated by our sponsors Carter Jonas.
And our final word should go to them. Thanks to their generosity we were able to provide substantial prize money which in turn attracted a quality turnout.
