Ladder Rules

A ladder is a fun & flexible competition format where players move up or down the “ladder” based on their match results.

  • Players are randomly allocated their initial places and then compete to climb higher through challenges and wins.
  • At the start of the ladder you have a number of FREE challenges (identified in the right side of the ladder). i.e. you can challenge anyone on the ladder.
  • When you have used all your free challenges you can challenge only up to 3 places above your current position; the "Challenge Span".
  • These challenges cannot be declined (except for holiday absence or temporary sickness) and you need to agree a date/time to play.
  • A player who is challenged must agree to a match with the challenger no later than two weeks after the challenge has been made unless:

            - The challenged player already has 2 other matches to play

            - The challenged player is unable to play due to temporary injury, holiday etc.

            - The two players cannot mutally agree on a date and time for a match.

  • The challenger is responsible for providing new (or nearly new) tennis balls for the match.
  • Default Match Format: Matches are to be played within one hour over a single long 'set'. The winner being the first to 8 games (by 2 clear games). If you reach 7-7 in games then play a tie-break (first to 7 points, by 2 clear points).
  • However, if BOTH PLAYERS AGREE before the match, a longer format match can be played. e.g. 3 conventional sets or 2 conventional sets with a championship tie-break decider (if needed). The results entry form presumes only one set has been played, so simply enter the number of games that reflects the correct match winner.
  • If the lower-placed player wins the match, they take the place of their higher-placed opponent in the ladder and the loser (and any others above challenger) drops down one place. If the lower-placed player loses, then there is no change in positions for either player but the loser may not challenge the same person again without challenging someone else first.
  • The winner must add results to Playwaze no later than 24 hours after the match.
  • Players will be automatically demoted by 2 places after 30 days of inactivity (excluding the leading player) so we recommend trying to play regularly!
  • New players can join the ladder throughout the season.

Enjoy your tennis and have fun!
