Houghton Tennis Cub season update

The summer league season is well underway and, so far, the club is having a very good season. After a difficult season last year when they struggled with injuries and got relegated, the Men’s 1st team have bounced back. This year, in division 4A, they won a nail-biting final game against Carisbrooke to clinch promotion and finished the season having won 6 and lost only 2 matches. Men’s 2 Have currently won 5 and lost 3 matches with one rearranged game to play. They should finish in the top half of division 6B.

The ladies’ 1st team were promoted last year to division 2A. They have acquitted themselves very well in the higher division having won 6 and lost 3, finishing a highly commendable 3rd out of 10. A new ladies’ 2nd team was entered this year, starting in division 5. They won 7 of 8 matches and finished top of the league by 13 points. Congratulations to Jo Rowe who won all 15 of the sets she played. The decision to run a 2nd team has given opportunities to new players, notably Kitty Bridgewood and Lucy McCarthy, while more experienced players benefitted from regular competitive matches.

The Veterans (over 40s) leagues are now underway, running until late August. Both men’s teams are finding it hard but hopefully will improve as the season progresses. The ladies’ team have won 2 matches and lost 2 so far and are comfortably mid-table. The mixed doubles leagues will start in July, and we have two teams in these.

Both men’s and ladies’ squads have some new players this season. New coach, George Bull, runs group coaching sessions for children and youths each week, as well as sessions for adults. He has also played for the men’s teams whenever he is available. George is also available for individual coaching sessions, and this offer has been taken up by players at all levels of experience. We are always on the lookout for new members and our facilities – both the clubhouse and the newly refurbished courts - are the envy of many of the other smaller clubs in the county. Membership fees are amongst the lowest in the county, with both individual and family options available.
