Whitehaven Community Tennis Club has a proud history spanning over 100 years. Originally located at the Whitehaven Playground alongside the cricket and rugby union clubs, the club initially featured eight grass courts, which gave rise to its original name, the Lawn Tennis Club. During the 1960s, several of these courts were allocated to the rugby union club, and three hard courts were subsequently constructed.
In the 1990s, following repeated incidents of vandalism, the club entered into a partnership between the club, the local community, and St Benedict’s School. The club’s first season at this venue was in 1995. However, due to further development work at the school, the club was required to relocate and subsequently played for several seasons at St Bees School.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought all tennis activity to a halt. Following the easing of restrictions and the resumption of tennis in March 2021 under strict guidelines, Whitehaven Community Tennis Club successfully secured new facilities at Whitehaven Academy.
After a highly successful 2023 season, the club committee made the decision to move to St Benedict’s School (Campus Whitehaven) from the 2024 season onwards. With access to four courts, the club aims to continue its growth, host local tournaments, and work towards becoming a year-round, 12-month club.
The club offers social sessions for members on Monday evenings (from April), running from 6:00pm until 9:00pm or dusk, as well as on Saturday mornings from 10:00am to 12:00pm. These sessions provide an opportunity for members to meet, play, and enjoy friendly tennis in a welcoming environment.
