Club News - 21st July

ACLTC Club Tournament 2019

This year’s event will run from Wednesday 4th until Sunday 15th September.

Players can state dates when they are unavailable but must be available to play
in the finals on Sunday 15th September. All finals will be played on the final Sunday.

This year, the senior events will take a different format from previous years.
The men’s and ladies’ singles, doubles and mixed doubles will have round robin
groups in the first half of the tournament for players of similar abilities. 1st and
2nd team players will not be included in these groups and will go straight
through to the second round. The winners of each round robin will then join
them. This will allow club members of all abilities to enter without worrying about the team players.

You can find more details on the schedule and entry forms here

Entries close on 19th August

Thursday Club Mornings

CLUB MORNING on Thursdays at 9:30 – A REMINDER

Now that summer holidays have arrived (for many, if not all!), remember that CLUB MORNING is held for all members and their guests lucky enough to be free to play on Thursday mornings.

Open to all senior members and juniors of appropriate standard (the majority, from what I have observed – if in doubt ask Alex or any senior member for an appraisal), Thursday morning is the only weekly daytime session at which you may “turn up and play” without any prior arrangement to play social doubles.

If you have not tried it yet, do give it a go – there is no commitment involved.

Recently joined members will be particularly welcome. This is a good opportunity to meet other members in an informal tennis setting.

ADVANCE NOTICE about the FUTURE USE of the CAR PARK

All those who use the Club’s CAR PARK, please note that the parking formation on the Car Park will be changed with effect from a date to be announced. Please read future Newsletters.

Details of the change of formation can be found here. The committee will be in touch once the date for the change is confirmed.

Open Day June 2019

We had wonderful weather and a fabulous turn out for our Open and Charity day. A temendous number of members helped through the day to make the event a memorable one. From plant stall through to Pimms and Strawberries, Henna decoration, raffles and of course a great BBQ and music throughout the day.

Not forgetting the chance for many to experience tennis for the first time via our great coaching team we also had a Wheelchair tennis demonstration and the inaugural Ikin trophy.

We also encouraged nearly 40 new members throughout the event and following week.

We raised over £1000 which will be split between LOROS and the Ashby Trust fund.

A huge thank you to all those members who volunteered their time and attended during the day.

Talia Neilson-Gatenby gains a place on the ITF circuit

Talia was awarded a wild card into the ITF tournament in Edinburgh last week and she then went on to win it! She played 5 matches all of them against tough opponents. Talia won the semi final 6-3 6-0 against a spanish opponent who plays for Spain in their under 16 team , and then went on to win the final 6-2 6-1 against a German opponent. To win an ITF at 13 years old is a real achievement and Talia will now have an ITF junior world ranking . We wish her all the best for the exciting future ahead of her!

Tennis Ball Information - Team Captains

Match tennis balls are to be collected from Alex Guzder by Team Captains at the beginning of the season (Summer or Winter) for all home matches. If Alex runs out of supply he will reorder so that they can be collected at the earliest opportunity.

Please could I ask that all used match balls are returned in their boxes (preferably dry) by team captains, to underneath the bench in the men’s changing room? If not dry, please place out of boxes in the basket outside the ladies changing room. You can leave empty boxes here underneath the basket, where myself and John Milner will either recycle or replace when dry in their tubes ready for reuse.

Balls are reused firstly for club night and then for coaching, after which they are recycled to a recycling company (who pay us per ball), schools, or dog charities, whichever suits the standard of ball. Preferably we wish to reuse the balls for our own enjoyment at club night, as this makes most economic and environmental sense.

Ladies, we have permission to knock on the men’s changing room door to make sure the coast is clear, to perform this task!!

If this is a problem to anyone please let me know - Janet Braithwaite

Tennis Ball Information - Club Night

Club Nighters can help themselves to balls that have been placed ready in the green box in the foyer. There are usually 7 tubes, 1 per court. Please can you replace dry balls back in tubes in the green box after use. If they are wet or damp, please place out of box in the basket, outside ladies changing area, to dry. Empty boxes may be left underneath.

If you feel that the balls in the green box are not of a good standard, please check the storage area under the basket outside ladies changing area and choose a suitable set. The set which are found to be unsuitable may be placed in the dry area of the basket (out of box). Please place empty box underneath.
