24 Champs!

Junior Championships 2024
The Junior Championships were held on Sunday 8th September, on a slightly damp day, but we persevered and managed to chase the clouds away, enough for us to enjoy a barbecue too!
We had 15 entries across Under 8, 10, 12 and 14 age groups and the winners were:

  • U8   Alistair Vittery    runner up: Jamie Hornby
  • U10 Alexander Bagot      runner up: Ollie Hornby
  • U12 Elizabeth Johnson  runner up: Layla Miller
  • U14 Elizabeth Johnson  (pictured right)    runner up: Freddie Hurley

There were eight entrants in the Under 8 competition, who played a round robin format which made for a lot of tennis and some very close games. Alistair won all his matches and was the deserved winner but the places for 2nd and 3rd were very close indeed. Some of these players will now be making the transition to orange ball next season so our younger red ball players have another year to make their mark!

The Under 10s played a full set and showed great sportsmanship and determination. The 6-4 score was testament to this! Alexander has been a member of the club for a few years and it was lovely to see him lifting the trophy this year! Congratulations to his opponent Olly Hornby who is relatively new to tennis and has been playing regularly and making fantastic progress.

Olly was awarded the Harold Walker Trophy for the Most Improved Junior Player.

Our older players all played each other but scored separately for their relative age groups. Elizabeth won all her matches and received the trophy for both the U12 and U14 age groups. Layla was a strong competitor and runner up for the U12s with Freddie being runner up in the U14 age group.

Again, our parent volunteer umpires were fantastic and the competition could not have gone ahead without them. Thank you to our supportive committee members, parents who brough cake and made tea and those who barbecued and supported. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all!
