Men's Over 60s 2nd Team League Champions and Promotion, July 2024

Not to be completely outdone by the Men's Over 60s 1st team, the 2nd team had a storming season and secured promotion, losing just one match out of the six played.

That defeat came at home to Northumberland 2 in June, and all would hinge on the return fixture at their place in August.  Captain Gordon Rutter was injured for this crucial encounter, and reserves were thin on the ground, but answering the call came Steve McCarrick, social tennis demon, but a bit rusty at league matches.

Established number 1 pair, Cameron Boyd and Mike Thornton, secured three sets out of four, so all would hinge on number 2 pair, Steve Wingate and Steve McCarrick.  Despite the pressure, the newly formed partnership proved inspired, with all four sets going the way of Morpeth, thus delivering a 7-1 win and promotion as winners of Division C.

We must, though, mention Bill Dunn, both an excellent player in the squad, playing three matches in tandem with Gordon, and one of the nicest chaps you could ever meet.  Unfortunately, before the last match of the season, Bill lost his battle with prostate cancer.  He will be sorely missed for his ebullience, wicked humour and willingness to help anyone.
