Ladies' Over 60s League Champions and Promotion, July 2024

After relegation from the top league the previous season, Morpeth's Ladies' Over 60s team was hoping to get back amongst the elite with a strong performance this season.  Little did they realise when they started out on April 21st, that they would simply sweep all opposition aside.

In that first match, captain Janet Robinson, ably assisted by partner Lilian Brown and the second pair of Janet Horscroft and Jane Cockburn, dismantled the visiting Corbridge side, losing only two games.

Further emphatic victories followed in May, at David Lloyd Sunderland and at home to Northumberland 2, with Rachael Michie, Helen Ball and Gillian Gordon contributing to the wins.

Perhaps the high point, though, was the return fixture against Corbridge, on their tricky hard courts.  Gillian Gordon, Lilian Brown, Janet Horscroft and Jane Cockburn came away without conceding a game.  So, in 16 sets against Corbridge, Morpeth lost only two games!

Northumberland 2 proved to be the stiffest opposition, but in both matches Morpeth came through 6-2.  A clean sweep of victories was secured with another 8-0 win, this time at home to David Lloyd Sunderland.  Special mention must go to Hee Yun Chung, new to the league, but delivering the goods with aplomb in both of the last two matches.

So, congratulations to the whole team, including Helen Ball, who's not had a mention yet, and all those ready to step into the fray should injury or other circumstance have ruled an allocated player out, and good luck in Group A next season!
